The International Nuclear Safety Group (INSAG) is a group of experts with high professional competence in the field of safety working in regulatory organizations, technical support organisations, research and academic institutions and the nuclear industry.INSAG is convened under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with the objective to provide authoritative advice and guidance on nuclear safety approaches, policies and principles. The purpose of this report is to update findings of the International Nuclear Safety Advisory Group’s Summary Report on the Post-Accident Review Meeting on the Chernobyl Accident (INSAG-1), published in September 1986, in the light of further information that has been revealed since that meeting. INSAG stands by the general conclusions of INSAG-1 about the accident’s causes and their implications for the safety of the Chernobyl type light water cooled graphite moderated RBMK reactors. Since the 1986 Vienna Conference, a considerable amount of additional analytical work has been carried out by expert groups throughout the world on the causes of the Chernobyl accident. Other information has also come to light, some of it contradictory. The present publication updates that part of the INSAG-1 report that concentrated on the causes of the accident. Most important among the sources of this information are reports by two Soviet committees chaired by N. Although the United States nuclear energy safety culture is and always has been equivalent or better than other countries, the case of the Soviet Union and the Chernobyl accident revealed the terrible consequences if this safety culture begins to become neglected.

The number of people that have since died as a result of long-term radiation poisoning and subsequent cancer is difficult to estimate. al., in a peer-reviewed article, estimated that the accident had caused over 5,000 cases of cancer in Europe alone and expects this number to increase to around 41,000 cases by 2065 (2006).By William Drees The Chernobyl Accident and Lessons Learned Overview Generally, when people hear the term nuclear disaster, the first event that comes to mind is that of the accident at Chernobyl. This is because Chernobyl is considered by experts to be the worst nuclear accident in history.Late at night on 26 April 1986 in the then USSR, a team of nuclear workers prepared to conduct a test on Reactor 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant as part of an otherwise routine shutdown. The exercise was to test a modified safety system and determine how long the reactor’s steam turbines would continue to power to the main coolant pumps following a loss of main electrical power supply. In particular, INSAG will provide recommendations and opinions on current and emerging nuclear safety issues to the IAEA, the nuclear community and the public.
